White Paper:
Advances in Gastrointestinal Protozoa Testing:
Molecular Ova and Parasite Investigations
What this white paper provides
This comprehensive white paper provides an overview of the challenges of traditional microscopic detection of gastrointestinal (GI) protozoa, and describes the advantages of including molecular techniques in this diagnostic workflow. A new ‘molecular O&P’ technique using real-time multiplex PCR is described as a complementary screening method that can;
- identify a significant majority of GI parasites,
- increase positive detection rates and coinfection,
- provide a significantly faster time to result.
The paper is presented in collaboration with five key opinion leaders within GI diagnostics - Dr Bobbi Pritt, Dr Marc Couturier, Dr Glen Hansen, Lexi Bracken and Dr Damien Stark.
What we learn from this white paper
- Understanding of disease burden and current laboratory testing methodologies for GI protozoa in the US
- Workflow advantages of ‘Molecular Ova & Parasite’ investigation
- Benefits of molecular testing to patients and the healthcare system

“Cryptosporidium and Giardia are the two primary parasites that all of the
labs in the United States see, and we do a number of different types of
tests for them. They cause a significant burden on our population in terms
of work loss and economic productivity. The symptoms of Cryptosporidium
and Giardia infection can last for weeks.”
